1) Nigel @ IFI Critical Take: Cinema of Protest
Come along to the Irish Film Institute this Monday at 6:30pm to see Nigel as one of the three panellists discussing protest movies. Superfans amongst you will recall Páraic speaking at one earlier this year.
Here’s the blurb:
The Critical Take is a free event that takes place at the end of every month when a panel of three invited speakers initiate an open discussion about three films from the IFI programme.
Join our panel on August 31st for a special edition of The Critical Take when we discuss and consider three of the films screening as part of this month’s season on protest cinema: Sergei Eisenstein’s Strike (screening August 4th); Gillo Pontecorvo’s Battle of Algiers (August 13th); and Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing (August 25th).
This month’s panel includes filmmaker Tadhg O’Sullivan and Artist, filmmaker and co-founder of PLASTIK Festival of Artists’ Moving Image, Jenny Brady and Nigel Wheatley from Spooool.ie.
It’s usually about new releases so it’s fun to see it focussing on picks from a film season at the IFI. Also… it’s free! Find out more here.
2) Arcade Fire: The Reflektor Tapes @ Light House Cinema
To celebrate the Irish release of Arcade Fire’s The Reflektor Tapes, Light House Cinema will have a launch event and screening on September 24th. There’s a pre-party at 7.30pm and the film begins at 9pm.
The Reflektor Tapes is an insight into the making of Arcade Fire’s album “Reflektor”. The film charts the band’s creative journey as they lay foundations for the album in Jamaica, commence recording sessions in Montreal and play an impromptu gig at a Haitian hotel on the first night of Carnival, before bringing their live show to Los Angeles and London.
Tickets are €10 and are on sale now here.
3) Colm Meaney might play Martin McGuinness
You always have to be careful with definitive statements when talking about matters regarding Northern Ireland never mind films about two of its key political figures. News is trickling down that Colm Meaney is in advanced talks to play Martin Mc Guinness in The Journey a film that examines the friendship that developed between the deputy first minister and first minister Ian Paisley. Timothy Spall is already on board to star as Dr. Paisley.
Meaney certainly bares a resemblance to the Derry native, the only real question will be the accent. It couldn’t be any worse a film than his 2013 outing, A Belfast Story.
4) Mad Max: Fury Road Honest Trailer
Honest trailers folk nail it once again.
5) Ghosthunters – On Icy Trails Trailer
This supposedly features Amy Huberman but I damned if I can spot her in the trailer. It’s released on October 2nd just in time for Halloween. Pretty sure Ghostbusters might have a thing to say about the green slime ball of a side kick as I can’t seem to put my finger on it… but oh wait, I’ve got it… they’ve totally ripped off Slimer.
