1) James Bond 24

Hurrah! Sam Mendes has signed on to direct the 24th instalment of the the James Bond franchise. We here at Spooool were big fans of his 2012 effort Skyfall, perhaps going so far as to say it was the best Bond yet? We’re not cool enough to say On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Don’t get too excited though as we shan’t be seeing it until October 2015.

2) GAZE

Gaze in wonder at the programme for the 21st International LGBT Film Festival which will take place at the Lighthouse cinema from the 1st to the 5th of August. Highlights will be The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name, Bill Hughes’ look at the experiences of the LBGT community in Ireland over a century from Oscar Wilde to decriminalisation. The programme will also be host to talks with Jim Carroll’s Banter making an appearance tackling the issue of pop culture’s representation of female power. More info here.

3) Slaughterhouse-Five

With Pacific Rim opening today we learned that director Guillermo del Toro thinks Charlie Kaufman is ideal to adapt Kurt Vonnegut’s 1969 satirical novel “Slaughterhouse-Five”. The film was previously made in 1972 and tells the story of Billy Pilgrim and his experience of WWII and journey’s through time. Who knows when we will see this though as Crimson Peak is next up for del Toro and penciled in for a 2015 release. Read more here.

4) Film Fleadh in Full Swing

The 25th Galway Film Fleadh is now underway and your intrepid Spooool.ie reporters will be heading west today to try and pack as many films into a weekend as possible, check back early next week for all the coverage and feedback. Amongst the Irish fare we hope to check out is Johnny Gogan’s Black Ice (out Sept 20th), George Kane’s Discoverdale, Donal Foreman’s Out of Here, Steph Green’s Run & Jump (pictured) and Stephen Brown’s The Sea.

5) Oldboy Remake

So the trailer for the Old Boy remake from Spike Lee has dropped and it won’t make any fans of Chan-wook Park’s original very happy. Looking like a near shot for shot re-hashing of the original, we’ll have to wait until December to pass final judgement.
