1) A poodle under one arm and a two foot salami…

Yes it’s John Hughes season at the Lighthouse! It’s a pretty impressive haul; The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pick and Sixteen Candles all making the cut. Credit must be given to the Lighthouse for consistently giving the public what they want and with this season they are examining without question one of, if not the greatest directors of the 80s. Book your tickets now!

2) The Wire Movie

Ha, got ya. No of course they’re not making a film of the greatest TV show ever made (Breaking Bad can suck it). However I recently saw the trailer for Snitch, a Dwayne Johnson paint by numbers film and dismissed it until Omar (Michael Kenneth Williams) turned up and started talking about the game, thus making it a must see.

3) No drummer jokes please

So Ginger Baker is a prick by all accounts. So why go and make a documentary about him? Well it just happens that he is the greatest English drummer, ever, or so they say. They being Johnny Rotten, Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith and Lars Ulrich. There was an interesting piece on guardian.co.uk where their reporter Michael Hann tried to conduct a Q&A with him after a screening. You can watch the car crash here. The film opens today in the Lighthouse, click here for details. He’s still only a drummer though, ba dum tish!

4) Frances Ha

I loved last year’s Damsels in Distress which starred Greta Gerwig as a melancholic woman determined to cure depression with a dance craze. With Frances Ha, Gerwig and her beau Noah Baumbach, have penned a romantic comedy with Gerwig as the lead. This is Baumbach’s first film since 2010’s very enjoyable Greenberg which also starred Gerwig. So fingers crossed for their first outing as co-writers.

5) Cannes Posters

For the week that’s in it feast your eyes on some of the prettiest posters for three films playing at Cannes…
